The Five Year Engagement is Hilarious

Jason Segal

Jason Segal

I love Jason Segal.  There, I said it.  I believe he has the perfect blend of goofy, sweet, and fun.  My whole family loved him in the Muppet Movie that came out in November of last year.  So, when I told the kids that their Dad and I were headed out to see a Jason Segal movie, they did not understand why they couldn’t come with us.  I had to explain that this one was a little different.  🙂

Yes, this movie is for a different audience than the Muppets and the subject matter is adult, however, the same silliness you see with Jason in the Muppets is quite evident again in this movie.  He’s got a big kid personality, and just so darn likable in many different types of roles.

Tom and Violet Fall in Love

Jason Segal plays Tom and Emily Blunt plays Violet.  They meet at a “make up your own superhero” New Year’s Eve party.  Violet decides to go as Princess Diana and Tom goes as “Super Bunny”.  He wears a huge pink and fluffy bunny suit that says Super Bunny across the chest and he just looks HILARIOUS.  I start cracking up just thinking of him in that suit.

Jason Segal now has the same effect on me as Will Ferrell, Martin Short and Steve Martin.  All three of these men make me laugh just by thinking about them.  They just have this innate ability to make people thoroughly enjoy their goofiness and to always be on their side.

So, back to the movie.  At this party, they get to know each other and start to date.

The Movie Begins

You can tell from the very first scene that this is going to be a very enjoyable movie.  Tom and Violet are

driving on New Year’s Eve, and Tom clearly is nervous about something and starts blubbering and not making sense.  Jason Segal pulls this off so well.  It turns out that he has planned to propose to Violet that night and has a big plan all set up and needs to get her to a certain place at a certain time.

The place they need to get to is the restaurant where Tom works with his best friend, Alex, played by Chris Pratt.  Chris is on the sit com, “Parks and Recreation” with Amy Poehler.  He is just absolutely hilarious in this movie.  I think he has a long, successful comedic career ahead of him.  🙂

Anyhow, by the time Tom and Violet arrive at the restaurant, Tom has broken down and admitted that he is going to propose to Violet that night.  Violet still is eager to see what Tom had planned, so they tell Alex to go ahead with his part in the plan.  Seriously hilarious.

So, this botched up proposal plan is a foreshadow of the obstacles ahead for Tom and Violet as they strive to be united in marriage.

San Francisco and University of Michigan

The movie takes place in San Francisco and the University of Michigan.  Tom and Violet live in San Francisco until Violet is accepted to a graduate program at the University of Michigan.  Tom agrees to postpone their wedding so that Violet can pursue her graduate degree.

Instead of working in a high end San Francisco restaurant, Tom works in the local’s favorite sandwich shop. Violet has her new friends at the University and Tom has his new friends at the sandwich shop and a very funny stay at home dad friend.

Things start to slowly fall apart in Michigan and the movie takes you through their trials and tribulations.

Jason Segal’s character is super sweet.  He gives up everything to follow his true love.  He tries his best, things do not go as planned, but he continues with his fun and sweet attitude.

The relatives from Tom and Violet’s family play a very funny role in this movie as well.  The engagement party scene with all of the relatives is just wonderfully hilarious.  I was crying from hysterical laughter during this scene.  🙂

This movie reminds me of the movie, Friends with Kids:  Very Funny.  Fresh. Great Characters.  Awesome Ending.

Love the Ending

I will not go into detail about the ending of this wonderful movie.  But, I will say, I do not think I could have imagined a better ending.  Definitely a feel good movie, with fun characters, touching moments, and plenty of smart comedy throughout.  I saw this movie for a date night with my husband.  Great date night or girls night out movie!  Enjoy!
