Just for Fun

August 28, 2012 by Mom on the Make Leave a Comment

surfing big waveI was just reading a July post by Alice Bradley at Finslippy, where she shares about a watercolor class she is currently taking at a local museum.

She is taking this class purely for fun.  Imagine that, signing up for a class that is for YOU, not the kids, that is just solely for pure enjoyment.

You are not planning on using your new skills from your class for a job, or to make better dinners or to learn how to be more fitness oriented – just FUN stuff.

She asks her readers at the end of the post, if you could do something for fun, what would it be??

What a great question.

As I always like to go with my first thought on these types of questions, “learn to surf”, popped immediately into my noggin.

I swam competitively from the age of 8-22, and have always LOVED the water.  I mean absolutely relish being in it, love pools, love oceans, love lakes etc..

Oceans are particularly exciting to me what with the waves, the cute fish, the fish with teeth, the salt water, the smell of the ocean in the air, the surfing opportunities, parasailing, bodyboarding, jumping off rocks into the ocean, becoming entwined in kelp, and doing crazy swims like jumping off a boat at Alcatraz Island and swimming back to Aquatic Park beach in San Francisco.

I relish all of it.

The idea that I have only surfed once in my life, 5 1/2 years ago in Hanalei, is just not right.  The feeling of riding the few small waves that I caught was amazing, and quite the workout, I must say.

So, I will probably look more like this at the beginning of my lessons:

Ouch!

But can aspire to this :):

Me after a few lessons. 🙂

So, there you have it, I would take surfing lessons.

If you could do something purely for fun, what would it be?

Today’s Morning Swim Workout

Masters Swim Workout

Masters Swim Workout

The mornings are getting colder and darker.

There were thick clouds in the sky this morning.

When my alarm woke me at 5:25am, I felt like I had been run over by a truck.  I was simply exhausted and it felt like a huge weight was bearing down on my head.

I stayed in bed until about 5:45am, having conversations in my head about all of the reasons why I should take this morning off and not swim.

I went to bed at midnight, we had too many tiring activities this weekend for the kids, I will definitely not miss tomorrow’s practice if I give myself a break today, I’m just too tired.  And, on and on.

Finally at about 5:45am, I realized that I better get up now or this workout was not going to happen.  When I have the opportunity to swim in the morning, and I don’t take it, I am so mad at myself the rest of the day, its just not worth it to stay in bed.

So, I put on my warm jacket and my uggs, I trudged out the door, got in my car, and made it to practice.

The lifeguards were still taking off the covers when I arrived, which meant, I was early!  Imagine that.  I was almost finished with my warm up, and swimmers were still arriving.

I was really feeling proud of myself since a half hour earlier, I felt beyond exhausted and was definitely not going to go this morning.

So, here’s the workout:

300 swim
200 kick swim
100 drill swim
4x{75 kick, 50 scull swim, 50 kick swim, 25 fast}
2x{300 pull, 200 free/back, 100 IM}
400 warm down

My lesson for today is to not think too much when my alarm goes off.  I really have to work on getting into robotic mode, and just keep moving forward towards the door.  Just shut off all feeling.  Of course, I’ve reminded myself of the robotic mode many times before, hopefully it will stick now.

On my drive back from practice, I had to stop to let a group of about 20 wild turkeys cross the road in front of me. 🙂

The turkeys were using the crosswalk, waddling along on their own timetable.  So adorable.  I know, turkeys are not typically the most adorable creatures, but when they are with their friends and walking in such a sophisticated manner so as to use the crosswalk, they’re just super cute.

When I arrived home around 7:30am, Broadway and Imagineer had already gotten ready for school and eaten breakfast.

If I had stayed in bed, I would have been in a grumpy mood all day.  So glad I pushed through. 🙂

Creative Marriage Proposals

I was watching Matt Grevers win the 100 Back last week in the Olympics, and was so impressed, I wanted to find out more about him.  So, I started with a google search.

One of the first news stories that comes up when you search for Matt Grevers is his surprise marriage proposal to fellow swimmer, Annie Chandler, that took place earlier this year.
