Sounds From a Five Year Old Playdate

January 9, 2013 by Mom on the Make 2 Comments

Interview with 4 year oldSounds from a 5 year old playdate in my home today……

Mom: Would you like chicken noodle soup or corn dogs?

Kids:  “Chicken Noodle soup”, they screamed in a VERY excited manner

Mom: Sure, no problem

Bam Bam’s friend while eating chicken soup: With a sour face, “This doesn’t taste like my chicken noodle soup.”

Bam Bam: Yeah, this doesn’t taste like my chicken noodle soup. (Note: this is the same chicken noodle soup he has almost every day)

Mom: Would you like corn dogs then instead of soup?

Kids: No

Mom: Would you like a turkey sandwich?

Kids: Can we have corn dogs?

Bam Bam’s Friend:  Can I take off the corn and only eat the hot dog?

Mom: Yes.

(Note to self: I feel like I’m a short order cook.  Maybe that can be a part time job idea for me.)

After Lunch…..

Bam Bam: Mom, can we set up our grey tent in the backyard?

Mom: But, its pouring rain outside and you’re both wearing shorts.

Bam Bam: That’s ok, we’ll wear our rain boots and carry an umbrella over our lego box.

Mom: Well, ok then. 🙂

Glitter Glue Is Not My Friend

January 9, 2013 by Mom on the Make 2 Comments

Glitter Glue and Five Year olds are not the ideal match…….

Bam Bam went to a birthday party a few days ago and came home with a goodie bag as they often do.  Only this time, there was a tube of glitter glue in the festive bag.

I mean, really?  Tubes of glitter glue to a bunch of five year olds?!

Halfway home, said tube of blue colored glitter glue was squeezed out in the form of several large circles and squiggly lines on the back seat carpet of our minivan.  The display resembled an exhibit at a modern art museum. (now, that’s seeing the glass half full)  Good for me.

I think glitter glue and red cherry cough syrup are my two worst enemies.

Its Ok to Have Snowflakes in your Living Room

December 24, 2012 by Mom on the Make 2 Comments

Over the 11 years of my parenting experience, I have learned that it is important to let go of our need to keep everything clean and tidy.handmade snowflake

Just completely and totally dispense that need when your kids are young.

Our children need to create, explore, get messy, and be loud.  Too many restrictions yield a muzzle on their creativity, and that is not a good thing.

Bam Bam, my five year old, came home last week and was over the moon excited to show me what he had learned in school that day…….how to make snowflakes out of plain old paper.

Now, if you can recall from your elementary school days, making snowflakes involves quite a bit of scrap paper.  You fold the paper several times, then cut the corners of the original paper, and then you cut some more, and a little more to create that perfectly unique snowflake.

The kind of snowflake that you will want to prance around all day and show your family and friends.  You wanted them to know that you were responsible for creating something extra spectacular.

The gleam in Bam Bam’s eyes as he folded the paper, then cut the corners a few times, and then a few times more, and then told me to “wait until I open the paper”.

When he opened the paper and waited to see my reaction, his eyes were just shining and his face glowing with anticipation to hear what I thought of his incredible creation.

Of course, I was amazed and in awe and overflowing with compliments.

And, of course, I just thought he was the cutest thing ever.  The delight in his eyes was just priceless.

Since that day, a few days ago now, about 50 more snowflakes have shown up around my house.  They are now gracing most of the walls in my home.  They are hanging from the ceiling in the living room.  They are all over my Christmas tree.  They are all over my refrigerator.

It looks like there was a wild snow storm of tiny little paper bits on my living room floor.  The floor is fully covered with the scrap paper that was created as the snowflakes went through the trimming process.

Time to embrace the messy and celebrate creativity and the joy of kids just being kids.  Gotta love it.  🙂

Merry Christmas Eve Everyone.  Enjoy your holiday.

Fooled By Five Year Olds

December 5, 2012 by Mom on the Make 1 Comment

Bam Bam had a friend over today for a playdate after school.

They had finished their chicken noodle soup, and really wanted dessert.

I gave them two pieces of licorice.

They wanted more.

A few minutes later, they came running up to me to let me know that there was a T-Rex on our front lawn!

I just HAD to go look at it before it attacked our home.

So, I went to the front yard.

Surprise, surprise, no T-Rex in sight.

When I came back in the house, I saw both boys happily munching on 3 more pieces of licorice each.

They punked me.

Man, I really have to stay on my toes at ALL times.

Dinner Conversation With a Five Year Old

November 26, 2012 by Mom on the Make 7 Comments

My five year old son, Bam Bam, who was the star of Interview with a Four Year Old, says some pretty funny things during mealtime,Interview with 4 year old and tonight was no different.

Just as I was about to take my first bite of my delicious looking barbeque chicken salad from Trader Joe’s, Bam Bam asked me to take him to the potty.  He has been going to the potty by himself for at least two years now, but lately, he likes to have an escort to the bathroom.  When I said no I was not going to take him to the potty, he asked “do spiders like toilet water?”

Now, normally, this would be a perfectly acceptable question (I guess), but at the dinner table, while everyone is enjoying their meal, is not the best of times to inquire about spiders and toilet water.  Or about anything having to do with toilet water for that matter.  But, Bam Bam put it out there, so we had to discuss toilet water and why certain animals or insects might or might not be drawn to toilet water.

Of course, the repeated use of the words toilet water, was just absolutely hysterical to a five year old.  I have mentioned previously how he is somewhat enamored with potty talk lately.  In the middle of his hysterics, he decided to pull down his shorts to reveal his bum, ran around our table, and said “feast your eyes”.  For those of you familiar, this is a line from the movie, Brave, where one of the villagers pulls up his kilt and says “feast your eyes”.  Well, this particular part of the movie is just the FUNNIEST thing ever to my five year old son and many five year old boys that we know.

Gotta love the lines that stick in the little ones’ heads.

Towards the end of dinner, I got up to check on the stove, and when I returned to the table, there was a stormtrooper at the bottom of my water glass.

I heard myself asking “Why is there a stormtrooper at the bottom of my glass?”  This question threw the whole table into a fit of laughter.  I have to admit, I was laughing as well at the words coming out of my mouth.

My nine year old, Imagineer, responded with “He’s scuba diving”.  Apparently Bam Bam thought that the Stormtrooper needed to go deep sea diving in my water glass, well before I was even close to finishing my lovely filtered water.  I guess I understand.  What’s the point of dropping a Stormtrooper into an empty glass?  I get it.

Another day, another bit of craziness.
