Argo, the movie

October 26, 2012 by Mom on the Make 2 Comments

argoWow.

Mountain Man and I just went out to see the new movie directed by Ben Affleck, called Argo.

I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat for the entire movie.

Its riveting from the first few minutes.

We actually had to walk around for awhile after the movie ended to shake it off before getting into our car to drive home.

Affleck brings this horrible time in history, the Iranian hostage crisis, to the big screen in a way that really throws you into the middle of the crisis.  This movie makes you really feel for the fugitives and hostages from this 1979-1981 period of history, by letting you view it from a more intimate perspective.

The movie provides an inside look at the fugitive’s plight, the CIA’s tough decisions, and the uprising of the Iranian people during that time.

The story centers around the six Americans that escaped during the attack on the US Embassy in November of 1979.  They were given refuge at the Canadian Embassy, until they were finally saved by a US Intelligence agent.  Affleck plays the part of the heroic Intelligence agent who pulls off the rescue of the century.

He has an idea to create a fake movie in Hollywood.  The six Americans hiding in the Canadian Embassy in Iran are given the parts of director, production design, cameraman, and associate producer for the movie.  These parts become their covers for their escape from Iran.  They are given papers indicating that they are visiting as the site location team for the film.

The fake film is a science fiction film based in the Middle East, which is their reasoning for needing Iran as a backdrop for some crucial scenes.

The speed of the movie really keeps you on your toes.

I enjoy movies and books that have the ability to bring important historical events to the masses in an intimate manner.  By intimate, I mean, really giving the reader or viewer the feeling that they are there in the situation, and can relate directly to the pivotal characters involved in the historical event.

It helps to create a better understanding of our past, and thats always a good thing.

I give this a hearty two thumbs up.  Be ready to be a bit drained from the drama, but it is well worth it.

I would be surprised if this movie didn’t take home quite a few awards during the movie award season.

Really well done.

Hotel Transylvania

October 15, 2012 by Mom on the Make 2 Comments

Our three kiddos have been wanting to see Hotel Transylvania for several weeks now.

Yesterday, we were FINALLY able to fit it into our bursting schedule, and I’m so glad we did.

This movie is cute, original, and heartwarming.

I really was not expecting much, but I have to say this was truly enjoyable from beginning to end.  I would say it is appropriate for ages 4 and up.

Our littlest is almost 5, and he was cracking up the whole time.  He absolutely loved it.

hotel transylvania

Adam Sandler plays Dracula and Selena Gomez plays his daughter, Mavis.  Because Dracula’s beloved wife was killed by humans shortly after Mavis was born, he thinks humans are dangerous.  He believes that all humans are out to get monsters.

In order to protect his daughter, Mavis, from these evil humans, he builds Hotel Transylvania in a secure area past the spooky forest, where most humans do not wander.

Every year, Dracula throws a birthday party for Mavis with hundreds of monsters at his hotel.

This movie revolves around her 118th birthday, when a human (played by Andy Samberg) wanders into the hotel for the first time.

The hilarity begins with the addition of the human to this monster scene.

The relationship between Dracula and Mavis is so sweet.  Drac is just a concerned father trying to protect his daughter, and its really heartwarming to see the lengths he goes to for his daughter’s safety and happiness.

My family of five gives this super fun movie a hearty 10 thumbs up.  Very well done.  Its such a win to find a kid’s movie that, we as parents, truly enjoy as well.

Sharkboy and Lavagirl

Sharkboy and Lavagirl

I just finished watching “Sharkboy and Lavagirl” with Imagineer and Bam-Bam.

This 2005 movie is played at least several times per year on the Disney Channel, and this was probably the third time I have seen the movie in its entirety.

Creative Marriage Proposals

I was watching Matt Grevers win the 100 Back last week in the Olympics, and was so impressed, I wanted to find out more about him.  So, I started with a google search.

One of the first news stories that comes up when you search for Matt Grevers is his surprise marriage proposal to fellow swimmer, Annie Chandler, that took place earlier this year.
