Sloppy Joes are the Safe Bet

September 25, 2012 by Mom on the Make 2 Comments

sloppy joesWhen I tell the little ones that we are having Sloppy Joes for dinner, everyone is happy.

There is no “I don’t feel like that”, “Can you make me something else?”, “Do we have frozen tamales in the freezer I can eat?”, “Can I go to Subway instead?”, and the list goes on…  🙂

Its just a unified reaction of happiness.

Since today is Monday and I had ground turkey meat in the fridge, I decided to go with the fail safe, the safe bet, the slam dunk, the easy dinner…..Sloppy Joes.

I thought I would share my steps to this culinary delight with you.

I know there are several different ways to make it, but we tend to stick with the traditional way which includes the sloppy joes spice mix in the envelope.  So easy.

We do use turkey meat instead of red meat, so I guess thats one break from the traditional method.

Only four ingredients are needed for delicious sloppy joes! 🙂

Sloppy Joe Dinner

My kids enjoy their sloppy joes with sesame seed buns.  They do not like it when I try to put the sloppy joe on bread.  They claim that its not really a sloppy joe without the bun. I guess they know best.

Broadway is really into eating green peppers these days, so I tend to include green peppers in at least several dinners per week.

Ingredients
  • 1½ pound ground turkey meat
  • 1 8 oz can tomato paste
  • 1 packet of sloppy joes seasoning
  • 1¼ cup water
Instructions
  1. Cook turkey meat until brown.
  2. Drain excess fat.
  3. Mix tomato paste, seasoning packet and water into cooked turkey.
  4. Bring to a boil.
  5. Turn to low heat, and let simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  6. Serve on sesame seed buns.
Notes
We typically use turkey meat, but red meat is the traditional meat for this dish. Both variations are great.

Yup, my younger set are and have been totally resistant to any kind of burger without the bun, they claim it’s crucial to making a burger or sloppy joe the real thing. My kids always loved sloppy Joes too, which is great considering how inexpensive and quick to the table they are. I always made them with tempeh for our vegetarian version.

That’s a great idea. I’ll have to try your tempeh sloppy joe’s recipe. My husband and I were just talking this week about trying to have an 80% vegetarian diet, and I’ve been looking for good recipes. I just checked your’s out and it sounds great. Thanks you! 🙂
