Hanalei Diaries: Day Two

November 15, 2012 by Mom on the Make Leave a Comment

Pu’u Poa Beach and Kilauea Bakery

Remember how I mentioned yesterday that there might be some rooster noise occurring in the wee hours of the morning.  Well, that “might” turned into a “most definitely” last night.  They started cockadoodle doing very early, and then again a few hours later.  I thought it started at 2am.  Mountain Man assures me that it was more like 5am.

Also, at one point in the night, the rain was dumping on our little house.  I woke up and told Mountain Man to go turn off the sprinklers.  I thought I was back home and our sprinklers had gone haywire.  Nope.  Just a tropical rainfall.

Luckily, I grabbed some serious REM sleep post the noise from the roosters and did not wake up until 8am.

We all had a delightful breakfast of cereals and sausage, then headed out for a beach excursion.

We have been following the advice of Reveal Kauai and tried to visit a beach near Sea Lodge in Princeville.  Turns out, though, that when you arrive to this spectacularly gorgeous cliff with the most unbelievable view of the ocean, you then have to follow a slippery and steep path that winds around for about 10 minutes until you finally arrive at said beach.

In addition to having three kids under the age of 12 with us, we were carrying two boogie boards, one swimming noodle, 5 towels, and three bamboo mats.  We were in no shape to traverse a cliff-like path just to see a cool hidden beach.

Plan A was stalemated.

The good news is that with Reveal Kauai there are plenty of other options to check out.

We chose the closest “real gem” beach, found parking and checked it out.  The name of this beach is Hideaway Beach near the St. Regis hotel in Princeville.

We started following the path to get to this beach, or so we thought.  Apparently we took a left where we should have taken a right and found ourselves at the perfect spot for a beach outing.  Its the beach directly in front of the glamorous St. Regis resort in Princeville, Pu’u Poa Beach.

LOVE this beach.  Mark this down – Pu’u Poa Beach for snorkeling and incredible scenery.  There were huge trees lining the beach, providing natural shade while on the sand.

Another bonus is that the sand is the kind that does not stick to your feet.  There is a huge coral reef, providing incredible snorkeling with beautiful fish about a foot away from you, due to the shallow waters.

There are large black lava rocks on one side of the beach, providing wonderful climbing adventures for the younger set.  My 4 and 9 year olds loved watching the large black crabs traverse the lava rocks.  Really fun stuff.

All three of my kids loved this beach, and we are so happy we accidentally bumped into it.  We are definitely making a repeat visit to this one in the next few days.

After our beach outing, we were starved.  We were in the water for almost the entire hour and half visit to this beach.  Swimming and the sun = famished.

We chose to go to Kilauea Bakery for lunch and bakery treats.  We ordered slices of vegetarian, meat combo, and cheese pizza, porcini mushroom soup, berry smoothie, lemonade slushes, and Mountain Man ordered a full size coconut and stuck a straw in it for coconut juice.  As fresh as it gets.

Oh, and for dessert, we ordered chocolate chip cookies, macadamia vanilla cookies and a bear claw.  So delicious.

Highly recommend this bakery if you are visiting Hanalei.  The atmosphere is perfect with outdoor tables located in a quaint group of boutique shops in the historic Kong Lung shopping center.  Just lovely.

At Kilauea Bakery, the fresh breads, danishes, cookies, soups and pizzas are just perfect after a long day on the beach.  The was one of our favorite food stops on our last trip to Hawaii in 2008.

Daphne is an umbrella cockatoo, who is just delightful to visit, and sits perched in the main courtyard near the bakery.  We visited her almost five years ago during our stop here.  The kids just love her.  I actually discovered that she has her own website at Kong Lung Kauai.Daphne at Kong Lung

This was a great day.  🙂

Hanalei Diaries: On my way to Hanalei

November 13, 2012 by Mom on the Make Leave a Comment

I’m on an Alaska Airlines flight to Lihue, Kauai right now.  I am sitting next to Imagineer and Broadway in a group of three seats, while Mountain Man and Bam Bam are in the two seats to my right across the aisle.  The interior of this plane is decorated in greys, blues, and taupes.  We have already had three rounds of drinks, including orange juice, tropical mango juice, and cokes.

The group of passengers onboard seem to all be in good spirits.  Who wouldn’t be when you’re headed for Hawaii.  I mean, seriously, does it get any better?  Warm water, white sandy beaches, no alarm clocks, body surfing, real surfing, surfing lessons, and tropical hikes and waterfalls.

We are staying in Hanalei on the north shore of Kauai for the next 9 days and are really looking forward to tropical weather.  My iPhone weather app is showing 90-91 degrees for every day in this next 7 day period.  The temperatures have been dropping in the bay area, and we are all seriously missing the warm sunshine.

Imagineer and Broadway are watching the first Harry Potter movie on our iPad, and Bam Bam is watching it on Broadway’s iPod.  Thank goodness for eleven year olds.  Broadway was responsible for all of the entertainment set up for the plane ride.  This included downloading current favorite songs, downloading Harry Potter from iTunes, ensuring everyone had a notepad to draw or write on during the flight, and helping to make sure everyone was set with a book that they were excited to read.

I brought “Remember Me?”, by Sophie Kinsella, Imagineer “The London Eye Mystery”,  Broadway “The Dragon Rider”, Bam Bam “Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Ugly Truth”, and Mountain Man the third book in the Hunger Games series, whose name escapes me right now (update: Mockingjay).  He’s currently asleep in the middle seat, with Bam Bam turning the pages rather quickly and LOUDLY in his book right next to him.  I swear Mountain Man could sleep in the middle of grand central station.

About an hour ago, we enjoyed the onboard breakfast, a “Hawaiian breakfast skillet” meal.  Really yummy.  The base was sticky rice, with creamy scrambled eggs on top mixed with portuguese sausage and topped with spring onions.  The skillet meal was lined with chunks of pineapple.

hanalei bay

Majestic Hanalei Bay on our first day on the island.

Once we land in Lihue, we will head to Costco which is near the airport, then go to our house that we have rented through vrbo.  So excited to see it in person.  The reviews were excellent from past travelers. We are walkable to cute downtown Hanalei, a 5 minute stroll to Hanalei bay and we’re located on a cul-de sac.  The only negative review I could find was regarding some rooster noise early in the morning.  Apparently roosters are unaware of the appropriate time (according to humans) to start sqwuaking, but they seem to consistently pick 5am.

About an hour before our touchdown today, the flight attendants announced they would be delivering complimentary mai tais for their last round of drink service.  This was met with applause.

As we were getting closer to Kauai, we had a gorgeous view of the island of Oahu, then a few minutes later, Kauai.

My four year old, Bam Bam, was beside himself with excitement as he viewed the beaches from the plane.  When we touched ground, he kept repeating, “please take me to the sand and water now, please……….he said “Dad, you go get the rental car and Mom can take me to the sand and water”.  He just did not want to wait one more second.  He apparently also temporarily forgot the word beach and substituted it with sand and water. 🙂

About an hour later, he was riding the very calm waves of Hanalei Bay and grinning from ear to ear.

Beautiful view during my walk home after the beach today.  I lost my way home so walked twice as long.  Something I do not mind at all while in Hanalei.

My Napa Getaway

October 22, 2012 by Mom on the Make Leave a Comment

Sometimes its nice to step away from the laundry, the broken sprinklers, the door that refuses to close without sticking, and the coat closet that needs to be cleaned out, and just leave for an overnight with the hubby.

Getting out of my 3 mile radius for a getaway is just the ticket for rejuvenation and fun.

Yes, you guessed it, Mountain Man and I slipped away to Napa Valley this weekend for a getaway.  Napa is the perfect spot to rejuvenate.  I discussed my love for the wine country a few months ago when I wrote about our Sonoma Getaway for our 15th wedding anniversary that we enjoyed in April of this year.

This weekend we decided to try Priceline for the perfect hotel for our getaway.  The best deals we have found are always through the “Name your own Price” feature.  We choose the four star hotels and try to grab the lowest price possible.

This time we landed a deal at the Napa Valley Marriott Hotel and Spa.  Although the outside looks a little dated, the inside is spacious and completely updated.  We really enjoyed the comfy outside seating surrounding an inviting fire pit.

Every time I encounter a fire pit, I always think about how much fun it would be to have one in my backyard.  They allow you to dine outside year around, and they’re pretty. 🙂  I just love them.

Mustards Grill

When we first arrived to Napa, we dined at Mustards Grill.  Oh. My. Goodness. The dishes here are beautiful, organic, and absolutely delicious.

We started with the toasted baguette bread served with goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes and roasted garlic.  So good.  I did not realize until today, how easy it is to spread garlic if you cook it long enough.

We spread the goat cheese on the bread, then spread garlic on top, then sprinkled the sun dried tomatoes over the garlic.  Apparently, if you cook a whole head of garlic at 400 degrees for 40 minutes, it is possible to achieve this garlicky goodness in your very own home.  We are definitely going to try this soon.  The sweetness of the garlic really shines through when cooked in this manner.

For our main courses, Mountain Man ordered the barbecued ribs complemented with jalapeno corn stix.  I ordered the “Ever Popular Seafood tostada”.  The “Ever Popular” part in the title really grabbed my attention.  The tostada had several layers including a freshly baked corn tortilla, black beans, breaded petrale sole, cabbage salad, and an incredible dressing that was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy.  Incredible.

For dessert, we treated ourselves to the lemon lime tart pie.  This is one of the most unique pies I have ever tasted, and I would say Mountain Man agreed.  It begins with a lemon lime cream filling and delicious crust.  The awe factor of this dessert comes with the 6 inch high meringue.  Its called meringue, but it is not like any meringue I have tasted before.  It tastes like it has cream in the topping, and its cooked until slightly browned at the top.

I don’t know why, but this sculpture in front of Mustard’s Grill just cracked me up, so I had to snap a shot.  Its a very skinny man holding an umbrella in the fountain.

Funny statue at Mustards Grill in Napa. 🙂

Around 5pm that evening, we were treated to a wine tasting reception in the hotel lobby and enjoyed a chardonnay and merlot.  The wine tastes so much better when you are actually in wine country.  The difference is incredible.  It reminds me of the difference in the taste of Hershey chocolate from a grocery store versus eating chocolate while you are in Hershey, Pennsylvania.  Hershey tastes gourmet while in the chocolate making town.

After the wine tasting, we decided to explore downtown Napa, as we had never really been to this part of wine country.  We typically spend our time touring the vineyards and bike riding.

We were pleasantly surprised with downtown Napa.  Totally adorable and quaint.  Loved it.  There is a river that runs along the east side of downtown, providing many lovely riverside restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

Before choosing a spot to dine, we strolled for awhile along the river and by the many boutique type shops and wonderful smelling restaurants.

Fish Story

Finally, we came across a fish restaurant called “Fish Story” that looked promising.  We were able to grab a table outdoors directly next to the river.  Picture perfect.

Mountain Man was excited to order oysters and I was looking forward to my bowl of clam chowder.  Having stuffed myself with goodness at Mustard’s Grill earlier, I was not very hungry, so the chowder seemed perfect.

Check out Mountain Man’s beautiful oyster dish presentation below.  The taro chips were a pleasant surprise.  Delicious. Taro chips are now on my ourgroceries app to purchase during my next grocery store outing.  And, oh my goodness, the ceviche in the foreground of the photo was to die for.  I’m not normally a lover of cold fish stew, but this was amazing.  Perfect fish and spices topped off with lemon juice.  Yum.

We also both ordered from the artisanal wine selection.  Mountain Man enjoyed the Laird Pinot Grigio  and I went for the Baileyana Chard pictured below.  Both were exquisite.  Again, so fresh and perfect.

There was a super cool metal sculpture of a very large calamari in the front entry area to Fish Story that I just had to snap of photo of in aperture mode, no less. I’ve been trying to get out of automatic mode and test the waters of aperture.  I will share more in a future post. This photo is highlighting the sculpture, clearly.  With aperture, the background fades and becomes darker, allowing the primary image to shine.

Downtown Napa

After dinner, as we were walking around the downtown area, we ran into a 15 foot tall pumpkin headed ghost!

Then we ran into a lesson on how to do the cha cha cha. There were bronze and silver steps that had numbers on them for the steps for the man and woman dancing. We followed the step numbers, and were doing the Cha Cha Cha in downtown Napa. 🙂

Buttercream Bakery and Diner

The next morning, we yelped a few breakfast spots in Napa, and decided on the Buttercream Bakery and Diner.  Any eating establishment that has the word “bakery” in it is usually a slam dunk for me.  There are not many authentic bakeries around where I live, so when I see one, I get really excited.

Mountain Man absolutely loved his “Baja Omelette” and I liked my “Country Scramble”.  I will admit, Mountain Man’s was better.  Order the Baja Omelette if you ever have the chance to go here.

I just had to snap a few shots of the delicious treats in the bakery case.  SO good.

Cupcakes

The SF Giants are in the playoffs right now. Buttercream is in the spirit with their SF Giant themed cupcakes.

This was our last stop on our 24 hour getaway.  It was wonderful, rejuvenating, and now we have a list of adventures we need to come back to Napa to enjoy.  Bike rides, new restaurants, kayaking on the river, and checking out a few new wineries to name a few.

I love getaways with my hubby.  They’re the best.

My Sonoma Getaway

May 1, 2012 by Mom on the Make Leave a Comment

Benziger Winery

Benziger Winery from Tram Ride

Getaways from the daily grind are rejuvenating and, I believe, an absolute must for parents with young children.

My husband and I had access to a babysitter for one night for our three kids, so decided to run away to Sonoma, CA to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary.

The wine country is the ultimate spot for a quick getaway.

We arrived into Sonoma at 11am and we had to be back home by 5pm the next day, so we were determined to make the most of our 30 hours away……and, we did.

Glen Ellen was our first stop

Glen Ellen Village Market

Glen Ellen Village Market

After arriving into Sonoma proper, we drove about seven miles north to Glen Ellen to grab some lunch and take in a winery.  Glen Ellen is a sweet little town six miles northwest of Sonoma and has a population of 784 people.  Very quaint and super sweet.

We decided to stop at Glen Ellen Market for our lunch, as we have been there before and LOVE the hot sandwiches in the back right corner of the market in their deli.  This is a full market and, upon first glance, you might pass it up, as it looks like a small grocery store.  However, it has a LOT more character than a traditional grocery store.  There are many specialty items and organic foods, and, of course, their amazing deli.

I had first read about this market in yelp and found many rave reviews, which is why we tried this place about a year ago.  This market really is a unique find, and I highly recommend that you check it out if you are in this area.

We ordered two hot sandwiches including the Curry Turkey Ciabatta and Pork Loin Ciabatta.  You pick out the sandwich that you want behind the glass case and then they heat the sandwich up for you in a sandwich press, so it is as fresh as can be, and oh so delicious.

We could not pass up trying one of their delicious looking soups, so we chose the turkey sausage gumbo soup.  The soup was full of flavor and had just the right amount of spice.

Then, of course, there were amazing looking desserts.  After a little debating, we chose the lemon meringue pie.  We were so full, that we had to save the pie for a treat at the winery we were about to visit.  Tough life.  🙂

Benziger Winery

After the lunch at Glen Ellen Market, we headed up north a few miles to Benziger Winery.  In my opinion, this is one of the best wineries to visit when you’re in the wine country.  The winery sits on 89 acres and uses organic farming methods to cultivate their land.

We were there early in the afternoon on a Thursday, so there were very few people there, which really added to relaxing, “getting away from it all” feeling that we had while roaming the beautiful grounds.  This property is seriously so peaceful and gorgeous, you feel like you are in another world, and it is easy to forget about all of the stress you may be shouldering at home and work.

Benziger Winery Tram Tours

Benziger Winery

Benziger Winery View from the Tram

This winery is unique in that they offer tram tours to see the grounds a little more intimately than just wandering around.  There are two tours offered, one that is 45 minutes long and the other one is an hour and a half long.  With the shorter tour, you get to ride around the periphery of the winery, and visit an underground cave where the barrels of wine are stored.  With the longer tour, you will also get to go to an underground restaurant in the caves and enjoy wine and cheese.

Our tour guide was wonderful and went through the history of the winery and the wine making process in great detail.  He delivered his information with a lot of humorous antidotes. There were five other couples on the tram with us including folks from Missouri, Wisconsin and California.  After the periphery tour and wandering through the caves with the barrels, we were treated to wine tasting in the tasting room.  We were able to taste four of their wines.  I was most impressed with the SierraTerra Sauvignon Blanc.   They were all outstanding, but that was my favorite.  And, as usual, I thought briefly about joining the wine club package

where they send a bottle of wine to you every month, but I restrained myself and decided against it.  The wines always taste so good while at the winery, it is so tempting to join.

The weather was perfect for the tour as there was a slight wind, the skies were blue, and the temperature was probably in the high sixties.  I recommend visiting the wine country in the springtime, as the summer becomes very hot since the whole wine country is in a valley.

Inn at Sonoma

Inn at Sonoma

Inn at Sonoma

We looked at many hotels online and finally decided on the Inn at Sonoma.  This was definitely the right call.  This Inn is the perfect blend of bed and breakfast and hotel that we have ever come across.  Upon entering the main lobby, you are greeted with a cookie jar with fresh cookies.  The jar is always kept full, and the peanut butter chocolate chip cookies are homemade and delicious.  It was such a nice homey touch to add to the Inn and I’m sure is appreciated by all of their guests.  The decor was lovely with cozy furniture and a wonderful fireplace.

They also have a beverage center with fresh, ice cold water in a beautiful glass mason jar, hot coffee and tea.  The mason jar had fruit etched into the glass, and was just gorgeous.  I decided that I have to find this jar and put it in our kitchen with fresh slices of lime, orange and lemon and lots of ice, so my kids will be attracted to this water in the hot summer months rather than juice boxes and caprisuns.

The room’s decor was country with different patterns and colors that all matched together very well, and was super cozy for a getaway.

The Inn has a wine and appetizer hour from 4:30-6pm every evening.  There were several types of wine and cheeses and the best pumpkin pie we have ever had in our lives.  I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but it was so creamy and light with a fresh cream on top that was heavenly.

Wine and cheese just tastes so much better when you’re in the wine country.  Its probably the freshness factor.  It really is quite a big difference.

Cafe La Haye

Cafe La Haye

Cafe La Haye

Again, thanks to Yelp, we found another winner of a restaurant in Cafe la Haye.  Here’s a link to the Yelp reviews on Cafe la Haye.  My husband ordered the scallops and I ordered the pork ribs.  They were both delicious, but my favorite was the scallops.  In addition to the scallops, there were little potato pillows (similar to gnocchi) mixed in with fresh fava beans and other veggies.  The dish was so light and refreshing with the richness of the scallops and potato pillows mixed in for balance.

We chose the Rochioli Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc to complement our meals, and this was definitely the right choice.  The taste was so refreshing, and so many flavors emerged throughout the sipping experience.  Big thumbs up from both my husband and I.  I am usually a Chardonnay gal, but this Sauvignon Blanc is helping me to appreciate other styles.

We decided to order two desserts, so we could try two of their offerings, instead of just one.  Yes, we were full by this point, but the lists of sweets was so tempting…….you know how it goes.  We ordered the famous butterscotch pudding and the flourless chocolate cake.  Both were unbelievable.  The Butterscotch was melt in your mouth delicious and the cake was so rich and creamy and lined with chopped almonds which was such a nice touch.

Bike Riding on the Sonoma Trail

The Inn has several bikes for their guests to use, so on Friday morning, we decided to go for a relaxing ride through Sonoma.  By the way, I should mention that this is after an over the top full breakfast prepared by the Inn’s own chef.  We were treated to fresh blueberry scones, amazing quiche, french toast and fresh fruit.  My husband and I dined on the patio outside for our quiet breakfast and it was perfect.

The food was so amazing at the Inn, I’m tempted to purchase the The Four Sister’s Cookbook which highlights the food served at their Inns.  The Inn at Sonoma is one of a handful of boutique Inns that are owned by the Four Sister’s Network.

The Girl and the Fig

Girl and the Fig

Goat Cheese Plate at Girl and the Fig

The Girl and the Fig is located on Sonoma Square and is the highlight of many visitor’s trips to Sonoma.  We had been here once before and just had to return.  Their goat cheese plates are to die for and their duck dishes are wonderful.

The goat cheese plate comes with candied nuts to dip in the cheese, fig bread, and three types of goat cheese.  Before the Girl and the Fig, I did not know how varied goat cheeses can be.  They were all delicious.

My husband ordered the trout and fresh tossed greens, which was so light and refreshing.

After lunch, we wandered around the boutique shops of downtown Sonoma that surround Sonoma Square.

We left for our journey back home around 2pm.  We arrived back to our house fully rejuvenated and relaxed.

Take those getaways with the hubbies.  They really are the BEST!!  🙂
